I began my Tai Chi journey in earnest upon my return from walking the Camino del Santiago in 2005. All along the way, pilgrims greeted one another and parted with the reminder that the true pilgrimage begins when we reach our destination. This has proved oddly true, as one month later, I met my first tai chi teacher Jan Parker at one of the Special Training Martial Arts Camps sponsored by the National Women's Martial Arts Federation. In the workshop I attended, I found myself strangely moved by her simple question: "Does your structure support your intention?" This question has proved to be a touchstone that I come back to again and again.
Since that first workshop, I have studied intensively with Jan through weekend-long private lessons, classes, seminars, and as part of the curriculum study group she teaches on Bowen Island, B.C. Jan is an amazing and gifted teacher who truly walks her talk as best as I have ever seen anyone do. She embodies the tai chi lessons that she so generously shares and lovingly insists that with time and effort, anyone can learn this art.
I have also studied with Sam Masich. Jan introduced me to her teacher in 2006, and I have taken whatever opportunity I can to learn from him - attending seminars in Vancouver and Toronto and upon invitation, joining the Full Circle curriculum study group in 2007-2008. In the winter of 2009, I spent three months with Sam and a dozen others in Sam's second intensive study of the full traditional Yang style Taijiquan Curriculum.
Over the years, prior to the commencement of my intensive studies and since, I have taken workshops with other distinguished Tai Chi masters including Dr. Yang Jwing Ming, Wen Mei Yu, William C.C.Chen, Su Zi Fang, Paul Gallagher and Ken Cohen. I continue to regularly study with both Jan and Sam and am grateful for the opportunity.
In 2006, Jan encouraged me to start teaching - not because I know anything, but because she knew I wanted to learn this art. At the time, Sam said to me, "you are new to this art, but your understanding is deep." I stick with the principles and I am inspired by my teachers and my students, to explore and to share the riches of this amazing art.
If you are interested in a practice that can support you in understanding the power of change in your life, I hope you will contact me. Like me, you can begin to create a structure that supports your intention.
